Staying in Marchmont during the festivals

Student tenements south of The Meadows. Performers love it.

01

The honest version

Marchmont

Marchmont is the four-storey stone tenement neighbourhood directly south of The Meadows park. Long-let to Edinburgh University students most of the year; some of that stock comes onto the short-term market in August. Fifteen-to-twenty minutes through the park gets you to Pleasance Courtyard, Bristo Square, and most University-side venues. Quiet residential streets in the day; calm at night by Edinburgh standards. The flats themselves are inconsistent — some beautifully refurbished, some last decorated when Tony Blair was prime minister.

Stay here if, look elsewhere if

Stay here if

  • You're performing or crewing and need a base near Old Town venues without paying Old Town prices
  • You're staying the whole month
  • You want to live like a local

Look elsewhere if

  • You're mobility-limited (most flats are walk-ups, top-floor flats have no lift)
  • You want nightlife on the doorstep — Marchmont's pubs are local-local
  • You're travelling with small children
